Vash the Stampede is the main character of the anime series "Trigun". The story starts with the look and feel of a wacky western, but soon develops into a full fledged sci-fi with a deeper plot. Vash, also known as the "$$60,000,000,000 Man" for the damage he causes, is a goofy but mysterious red-cloaked gunman who uses a giant 6-shot revolver to fend off evil.
The model is designed using two origami design techniques known as "Circle packing" and "box-pleating", described in the book "Origami Design Secrets" by Robert Lang. I went through several iterations in design before folding this final version, which was folded from a single uncut 24" square of red/black paper.
The major challenges in folding this model were:
- creating the proper color changes on his legs, hands and dark mechanical arm. To do this, I used the sides of the paper to create these appendages so that I could turn the paper inside out, exposing the black.
- creating the gun. I reserved a strip of paper along the left sides of the square, enough to form a gun.
- folding the head. I was able to subdivide the top corner into many points to depict the spiky hairdo that Vash (and many an anime hero) is known for. The round glasses were formed by pulling out some extra paper and pinching the center and edges.
