The Avalon class luxury deep space yacht has been a popular private vessel for years. It’s power and speed make it ideal for a medium sized race vehicle. This is a model of the “Pride of Avalon”, once a private charter space transport, it has been modified into a high performance space racer.

The interior has been stripped down of all non essential parts and decor. What was once luxury suite-size cabins have been reduced to smaller quarters for the race pilots, mechanics and engineers. Everything has been re-engineered for speed and performance. The Pride of Avalon carries her own spare parts and tools for the crew and has limited self-repair technology. She is capable of planetfall landings which is great during the off-season for promotion purposes.

The main hull remains true to the Avalon original design. The engines are a custom built high performance warp package supplied by YoYodyne Propulsion technologies. It seems the only problem the crew has with this ship is flying it too fast.

The Pride of Avalon won the Federation 500, and has placed in the top ten in the last two race seasons.

Construction Notes

I have had this kitbash built for some time. When the Space Racers contest came up, I decided to finish it and enter the contest. The model is built of leftover parts from other kits. The main componets are a stand base from the Excelsior and wings and engine pods from a Naboo fighter. Other greeblies and dodads include a bridge unit from an Enterprise A, an F-18 canopy rail, some leftover vacuform bits, a rear top Excelsior hangar bay and engine cover and a few odds and ends. The six windows at the nose of the ship are cut up graphic tape. Everything was laid out in a general concept, and I made modifications and adjustments before gluing it all together. I wanted to do a federation fast attack cruiser with a pylon arrangement similar to the TOS Aurora, but in the end I decided on a conventional "flat wing" type profile. I ended up with a shape that looks fast even when it's parked.

Decals came from leftover fighter aircraft sheets. Weathering was done with pencils, pastels and ink washes. The stand is simply a wood base and brass rod paitned black.

The model measures 1 inch tall, 5.5 inches long and just shy of 5 inches across. This was a fun project.
