Scale: 1/24

After vanquishing Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo, Flash, Dale and Professor Zarkov found themselves marooned with no way home to Earth. To keep himself busy, and introduce sporting events to the long-suffering residents of Mongo, Flash introduced stock car racing. Since the artisans and technicians of Mongo were proficient at riveted vehicle fabrication and rocket technology, a few differences crept into the designs, but the basic NASCAR shapes were mostly adhered to. Local safety designs, such as port holes and hinged oval doors were introduced as well. Local traditions also allowed for the carriage of ray guns, blasters and beam projectors. The popularity of MASCAR (Mongo Association of Stock Car Auto Racing) has been growing steadily over the years.

Seen here is Flash and his car. His choice was an easy one: The same number and car shape as his distant cousin back on Earth: Jeff Gordon.

The Model

The model started as a basic Revellogram NASCAR kit, this one being #85-4141, Crayola Monte Carlo. The side window openings and rear wheel wells were covered with sheet styrene. The portholes were made from Plastruct tubing cut into small discs. The tailfins are sheet plastic cut to shape. The plethora of rivets are drops of Zap-A-Gap super glue (thick type). The whole vehicle was painted in basic Testors copper. The ray gun is made from several bead shapes. Basic numbers and some sponsor decals came from the SLIXX decals #24 sheet, and the Mongo sponsors (Zarkov Fuels, etc) were made on a laser printer and decal paper. The Flash figure is from the spares box, painted in Tamiya acrylics.

The idea came from the Rules page, where it says you can't just slap Jeff Gordon's decals on somebody else's car...I hope this counts as more than that!
