Speeder Bike & Scout

By Norm Lajoie

My attempt at the Classic AMT Speeder Bike took me 6 months to complete. When I first started it about a year ago, I actually returned the kit back to its box because the Trooper's overall look turned me off totally. It was only 6 months later that I revisited the kit and decided to go to town on him… and see if I could pull it off.

Basically the bike is OOB except for a few details that I reworked or replaced with scratch built parts. The bike main blaster received a new barrel made of a brass rod and a new corrugated energy conduit. The bike's larger energy conduits directly under the scout trooper were also replaced with homemade ones, by wrapping a copper cable over a center core.

The survival kit was also replaced with a scratch built one which was later cast out of resin. Modification to the steering handlebars was done to enable the scout to appear to lean off center and hopefully give the viewer the impression a fast pace chase taking place.

The figure was totally cut up in pieces and each part re-scribed and or re-shaped and super detailed as necessary. Copper wires were used to pin and secure each part back together; enabling me to pose the trooper as desired. Apoxie putty was used to fill the body parts' cavities and helped join and blend together the new figure.

The hardest part to do was the helmet, which was mostly deprived of sufficient details to make the figure worth building. The air tank received the appropriate details and the boots received threads and a boot holster was built out of copper sheet and a blaster was made using styrene. New armor pads were manufactured out of styrene and glued in place. The Scout’s fingers were cut off and re-assembled to form a full grip over the handlebars. The new hands were then pinned to the steering arms and the figure set in place and foot stirrups glued to the boots' soles.

All in all this was a fun build.Although the amount of modifications needed were maybe too much for the novice builder; it was well worth it to me. I hope you will enjoy modifying your Scout Trooper or your Speeder Bike as much as I did !
