Scratchbuilt Gundams

By Cesar Alfaro

Some more pictures of paper scratched models. Yes, this time they're Gundams. These were the first ones I tried, even before my latest attempt on Mechas.

The two tiny ones, the Patrol Gundam, and the Gladiator like one, are just about 5 inches tall each. They're inspired on different kind of mobile armors, so they may resemble something that you have seen before; even tough its particular design is my conception.

Then we have the big one, standing 6.8 inches tall and is scaled to my other 1/ 100 models. I tried to replicate one model that I saw on a store's magazine, I guess it was the RX-78 / something-like-that, not pretty sure. This one is special, since it was my first attempt at articulated joints. He's got limited movement on this wrists, elbows and shoulders and neck joints.

The were all built in 1998, and I used the same technique with all of them. First I drew a sketch of their general armor configuration and then, stared making them up from the feet up to their heads. Nothing fancy was used on their finish, except some Testors metal-like enamel.

The Hawk Gundam as I call him, is the second one I ever did. Standing 7.2 inches tall, I wanted him to be big, but yet, no massive. I really like his chest armor, and to me, it looks like a prey bird's beak front, thus his name. He has exchangeable booster jet packs that can be mounted either on this back assembly or at the sides of his legs (too skinny for my taste) Also, he's got a cutting two sided double weapon (Geez!) and a hand gun. By the time I came up with this one, the only Gundams I had ever seen, were in magazines and of the Endless Waltz series. That's why he looks like a custom made armor instead of the other serial military fighters.

And here we go with the girl. I was really obsessed with the idea of a Gundam Girl, but nothing, not even pictures seemed to exist of such a thing.

I've always been an Egypt lover, and I tried to bring that up on her construction. For her skirt, (since she was a girl she must have one, no chauvinism there!) I thought of the long front-rear thing court dancers used for Pharaoh's delight. Her jet pack booster was conceived as a beetle's hide, and her legs are longer and more insinuated than those of a strong RX-something, not to mention her high heels !!!

I couldn't come with spherical shapes made of paper, so I thought the chest should be covered with a cool, yet simple piece of armor, I even got a jewel-like iris thing on its center. (From a disposable Fuji camera focus lens) Her weapon I like the most, stylized, intimidating but most of all, it makes her look like you do not want to tangle with her on bad situations…that and the way her face is covered, so you can only see her eyes glaring purple. She 1/100 scaled and is some 6.6 inches tall.

These ere all built in 1999, and used the same technique as I always do.
