Galileo 7 Shuttlecraft

By Jerry Terrell

Name something besides Dr.Who's Tardis that's bigger on the inside than on the outside? No, it's not Shatner's ego, it's the Galileo 7! There were actually two full sized models of the Enterprise shuttlecraft. The one used for exterior shots had no interior detail and was not tall enough to stand up in. The one used for interior shots had plenty of headroom. I only mention this inconsistency to illustrate how difficult it is to build a truly accurate version of this ship! Many interior details changed from episode to episode. Pictures of the filming miniature don't exactly match some details of the full size model. My compromise was to treat the large version's exterior as the final word. I have to admit to choosing the interior version seen in "The Immunity Syndrome" because it only had two chairs to build. The rest of the space is filled with computer banks. These, along with the control panels, are lighted with LEDs in my model. The episode "Metamorphosis" was very helpfull in getting the aft detail right. I also found one clear photo of the landing gear. The shape and pivot points are correct, though I'm not that sure about it's size.

My Galileo 7 is just over 18 inches long, making it approximately 1/16th scale. It is constructed from sheet styrene with a 1/4 inch plywood floor for stability. Interior details are styrene, clear acrylic, brass, and wood. The engine nacelles are PVC pipe, ceramic cabinet knobs, and styrene details. The decals were made at a local printing shop.
